common questions

Yes, both! She’s trained in vocal pedagogy, meaning she teaches the fundamentals of healthy singing technique and focuses on building the voice first. She prefers the term “coach” to convey the tone of responsibility and collaboration expected as she helps singers hone their craft and own their practice. Abbie views technique as a vehicle to unlock potential for ease, sustainability, beauty, and expressivity. Above and beyond the technical, Abbie coaches her singers through passion projects and a myriad of skills in style, artistic interpretation, and performance.

Abbie works with her students on a range of genres including Musical Theatre, Pop, Jazz, Gospel, Christian Contemporary, Acoustic Singer/Songwriter, and Classical/Choral as well.

Talented and enthusiastic teens can be a great fit for the studio. The ones who are best suited for OHVS are usually musically-inclined, responsible, motivated, goal-oriented, curious, willing to explore the vocal exercises with a sense of humor, and click with Abbie’s personality and teaching style. Equally important of course, is the compatibility in terms of budget, studio availability, policies, and procedures in the studio offers. The onboarding process was crafted with these sorts of things in mind and serves as a way for us to try on the fit and see what we think!

Absolutely! Currently, most studio members are out-of-state and meet with Abbie for their private sessions and for studio events over Zoom.

Strictly speaking, it could be argued that one is more technique focused and the other is more performance focused, but we aren’t particularly stickler about it in our studio and these terms may be used interchangeably. The term “session” is usually favored to capture a tone of professionalism and also to cover the broad range of things we may work on in any given appointment, including singing-adjacent skills and consulting on topics pertaining to the singers goals.

Group courses–typically 8 weeks long–may be launched for local clients to meet in person. These classes focus on skills such as vocal improvisation and sight-reading and ear-training. Clients may also register for a variety of virtual studio events throughout the year.

Those on memberships may use two sick day passes a year. For more details see the policies page.

A workshop is a kind of class where we will study a topic relevant to singers. Masterclasses are events where a handful of students come prepared to perform their songs and get some feedback in the form of a “mini lesson” in front of the class.

Yes. Since “recital” sometimes has a classical connotation and because our studio members sing in a wide range of genres, dressing nicely and performing appropriate to the style, “showcase” is our go-to term.

The Voice Studio is the main gig of OHVS, however, Abbie has a home recording studio where she focuses on doing projects with musical families. Because of this separate angle of the business with a separate studio space and function, we keep the plural “studios”. Abbie believes that recording is another medium where she can strive to preserve the “open heart voice” of those she works with, capturing their personality, imagination, and unique beauty.
